Fucked Up Fridays

With only fifteen minutes left of Friday, I give you the Kamikaze.

1. You will need vodka, Triple Sec, some limes, a martini shaker, a couple of shot glasses, a knife, and a cutting board.

2. Halve four of these Mexican limes (regular limes: just use two) and place them aside for now.

3. Pour 1/4 part of vodka into your martini shaker.

4. 1/2 part Triple Sec.

5. Squeeze your lime halves into the shaker.

6. Shake.

7. Place a lime halve in the bottom of your shot glass for garnishing.

8. Serve.

9. Briefly admire your work, then bottoms up.

Have a great night and I'll see you next Fucked Up Friday.

Ratatat Tease A Tour

I've come into contact with LP3 (XL) in its entirety and it is phenomenal; I can not wait for this album to be released. As a special surprise, Ratatat will embark on a single week mini-tour making stops in some of the worst venues. The Echoplex? Alright Ratatat, I've already driven to Pomona for you, but I don't know why you just don't play the Troubadour again. The Music Hall of Williamsburg? I know that's right around your corner, literally, but why do you have to support the Bowery if you know better. It's alright Ratatat, I'm still in love.

07/07 - Mon Seattle, WA Chop Suey
07/08 - Tue Portland, OR Holocene
07/10 - Thu San Francisco, CA Slim's
07/12 - Sat Los Angeles, CA Echoplex
07/15 - Tue Brooklyn, NY Music Hall of Williamsburg

Give It Up For M.U.S.I.C.

So I came upon this SymbolOne remix back in February, but lately the song has crept its way back into my head and now I can't get enough. If you're into rumors, here's one: they say that SymbolOne are two long lost twins; one from Ireland and one from Croatia who found each other in '07 and decided to create music. Look it up for yourself to find out whether that's true or not. While you're at it, enjoy the track.

Nid & Sancy - M.U.S.I.C. (SymbolOne remix)

As long as we're on the subject of remixes, Animal Collective has re-visioned and remixed Ratatat's "Mirando." Until exposed to public ears, all the information available is that it is a "10 minute techno wonder," according to a recently emailed press release.

Pedro Winter Drops Daft Punk, Weezer News

ITM covered one of the most important interviews of the year, Pedro Winter and his involvement with Daft Punk. After serving as the duo's manager for 12 years the man in Banger steps down to focus on his label and career plans.

"The boys are in a studio in Paris at the moment," he revealed to ITM. "And I can't wait to listen to their new stuff! The good thing is that they are making music at the moment." While those creative juices are flowing again, it's not known at this stage when the new album might see the light of day. "They are slow, you know," Busy P laughed when asked. "They are taking their time, and they have a right."

Busy P also revealed that he recently decided to step down from the massive task of managing Daft Punk in order to allow him to focus all his energies on the Ed Banger record label. "I've stopped working with them really recently, because I want to focus and concentrate on Ed Banger and my artists, and my own career as Busy P." But after managing Daft Punk for 12 years, it's a safe bet that the relationship will continue to be a tight one." [in the mix]

If you haven't caught a wiff already, watch the Weezer video for "Pork and Beans" above featuring dozens of famous Youtube personalities including Daft Hands. Have a question about Rivers' mustache? Well he's quoted saying that his father had a mustache in all of his baby photos, so he's committed to passing the tradition through his child.

Morning Benders Achieve Perfection

FMLY friends The Morning Benders received an A+ from Campus Circle Magazine's "Summer Music Guide" released today. Coincidentally, Cameron and I both worked directly for Jeremy Wineberg (The Kutting Room/LAYOUTH/Invisible DJ) featured in the "l.a. faces" section just next to TMB. With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly

FMLY favorite, Sigur Ros, has announced that their forthcoming, Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust / With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly (XL), will be released stateside June 24. Released today is the LP's first single, "Gobbledigook." Containing a beautiful array of tribal melodies and primitive beats, this had become a personal favorite of mine. The album, co-produced by Sigur Ros and Flood, features contributions by Amiina, a track with 90 people singing, a mellotron and the group's first song in English. The artwork for the single can be found here and a clip of the NSFW video can be found here. I'm not sure how much of the album was inspired by Ryan McGinley, but from the looks of what we have so far you can expect an orchestrated mess of naked people in the new vid and maybe [hopefully] throughout the rest of the album. Ryan McGinley is an artist in New York City, you can check out his fantastic work here. In the mere hours that "Gobbledigook" has been online an overwhelming response has been received. Comparisons are already being drawn to Animal Collective's Sung Tongs leaving me to only hope for more of this music from Sigur Ros.

Tracklist for Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust

01. Gobbledigook
02. Inní mér syngur vitleysingur (Within me a lunatic sings)
03. Góðan daginn (Good day)

Hannah Montana vs Lustra

[Uh-oh, more copyright issues for Miley?]

In the red corner is Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus with her song "Rock Star," which I think is a wholesome song about how Hannah Montana is Miley's rock star.

Rockstar - Hannah Montana

In the blue corner resides Lustra holding onto "Scottie Doesn't Know," a song popularized by the movie Eurotrip. Lustra has developed a career solely off of a single song and could stand to make even more.

Scotty Doesnt Know - Lustra

What's up is that Lustra is suing the Hannah Montana Corp for copyright infringement. The songs due song awfully similar, but it is bound to happen with chords that basic and a harmony that simple. We'll see what happens in court. FMLY drank beers with Lustra a few years back when they played the Oakgrove benefit show and showcased "Scottie Doesn't Know" twice in a row. Nice group of guys.

New Nephews

As you may already know, Nephews played a live set on FMLY radio last week. For those of you unfamiliar with Nephews, they are a three piece instrumental band from LA known for their high energy shows and mystery. They are the body on American Football with the balls of Hella.

A couple of the recordings from the performance are up on their myspace and Split the Dribble is up for download! Check out Positive Stack as well. Their other recordings aren't great quality so if you really want to rock out listen to the Little Radio live recordings and go see them live.

El Architecture In Helsinki

Architecture in Helsinki will release their Like It Or Not EP this week. Now before you dismiss this saying that you've already heard "Like It Or Not," the group of eight has specifically reworked the track for this release. Joining the newish tune will be B-sides "One Heavy February" and IQ cover "Beef in Box." As an added bonus the architecturalists will toss in an El Guincho remix of "Like It Or Not" with a Max Tundra edition of "Hold Music." Look for this EP on digital release May 27 via Polyvinyl - physical copies available July 8.

XLR8R has a great interview with Will Sweeney, the artist behind Architecture's latest releases. Check it out here.

Stazi's Lemon Lips

So chances are that if you're a teen in Los Angeles then you know Stazi Kamikaze; whether it's noticing her at the Promenade or running into her at a party, I guarantee that she has played at least .001% of a role in your life thus far. At The Morning Benders concert the other night, bassist Timothy Rabbit mentioned to me that Stazi dabbled* in music under a Lemon Lips moniker. Well, I looked up Lemon Lips on MySpace and "dabble" is certainly a poor word choice. With six songs and 38,000 plays under her belt Stazi has the potential to become L.A.'s 'next hot thing,' and it doesn't hurt that her music is nice to listen to either. Someone give this girl some shows!

Nephews on Little Radio

Nephews played a live set on FMLY Radio (Little Radio) this morning, if you missed the show you can catch the mp3z when we post them. My memory is a bit shot, but the post-rock outfit played about a four or five song set that I more than enjoyed. From the song that started it all, "Chess Teacher," to the newest of new, "Sorefinger Road," Nephews played a powerhouse set of cutting edge music. If you did tune in and heard Luke's proposal of "Drug Lips," let the band know what you think through a MySpace message.

Moby @ Fox Studios

Fuck Daft Punk. Fuck The Rolling Stones. Fuck Radiohead. Fuck Roger Waters. Fuck Iron Maiden. There is one man in this galaxy that rings true to human nature, one man who speaks the absolute world. That man is Moby. Backed by a live band and switching between bass, guitar, and vocal duties Moby puts on one of the greatest live performances that you could ever imagine. Hearing "Natural Blues," "Porcelain," and "We Are All Made Of Stars" live with two female singers, a guitar, bass, keyboard and drummer reflects all beauty in life. If you're not a recreational drug user I would not advise seeing Moby, because his performance alone will get you fucked up. If you're attending the Electric Daisy Carnival on June 28th, do NOT miss Moby.

Indie Matrimony

Rolling Stone posted an interview with Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers) yesterday and it has had the internet wondering up a storm. Your two cents?

Rolling Stone: Did you run into any other major problems during the booking?

Anthony Kiedis: For some reason, this is the summer of bands getting married. I ran into that twice. I'm very keen on M.I.A., I think she's a rocking live performer. She wanted to play, she was very into it and it seemed like a great deal and suddenly she's getting married. Same with Hot Chip. They have a real groove; they write good songs and have an interesting personality. Except for the fact that they're getting married. Undone by matrimony, but not really undone.

If you're curious about Kiedis' festival and don't really give a shit about Hot Chip/M.I.A. weddings, then check out this line-up.

Words really don't describe the talent or drugs in these girls, here's a video.

Alright, so shoot me now. It's not that I like Usher, I just love making it in that club.'s not that I like Jesse McCartney one bit, but his new song has got me erect. Do you like this new jock bro jam. Let me know, please, I'm scared.

Islands Interview

I wrote this for IHEARTCOMIX, enjoy!

So I'm a few weeks late on my Coachella post, but I think that most are a few weeks slower now after that weekend. Since the dawn of my existence the phrase "April showers bring May flowers" has played a crucial role in my understanding of the Spring weather. This has developed further as I have grown older and learned the fascinating world of American pop culture [see Fat Joe's "I Make It Rain"]. However, on April 26 around 10pm I, along with thousands of others, learned first hand what an April shower was - and it came in the form of "Purple Rain."

Once a year, more than 50,000 people from all over the world make their way to the desert of Indio, CA for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Many live Coachella to Coachella, others are music festival fiends and there are those who are experiencing this for the first time. In the festival's ninth year, Coachella boasted a strong lineup of world-reknowned artists Prince, Roger Waters and Kraftwerk as well as indie favorites such as Animal Collective, Les Savy Fav and The Cool Kids. Taking a more electronic approach this year, it was not too large of a surprise to see Justice closing this years festival as the holy grail duo known as Daft Punk previously had just two years ago.

Known for its sweltering heat, everyone stands common ground at Coachella - they all want water. From fans to bands this stands true, which is where I met to a water stand.

Islands' Arm's Way is their second LP, due out in May. At the Coachella Music and Arts festival I was lucky enough to sit down with Aaron, the group's drummer, and discuss what's up with the guys.

Hey Aaron, so tell me a bit about the new album.

Well it's titled Arm's Way and will be released on Anti- May 20. We took a different approach with this album in that the music is focused on the band members - there are not any special appearances. Arm's was conceived in Montreal, we wrote the songs in a room with old NOFX and Insane Clown Posse posters on the wall. As a band we put the music together and then singer Nick Thorburn wrote the lyrics.

Speaking of Nick, I'll bring up the Unicorns briefly. I notice that Islands is usually marketed [on blogs and other websites] as the ex-Unicorns. Personally, I don't see that being appropriate. With the release of Arm's Way do you think that will disappear?

When both Nick and Jaime were part of Islands it made more sense to be dubbed ex-Unicorns. With Jamie not in the band it's still going to happen but what are you going to do about it? With Arm's Way I think that the title will fade.

I was lucky enough to catch your free show with Yo Majesty [who didn't show up] at the R Bar in NYC last October during CMJ week. I remember that you played a lot of new tunes there, how long has this album been complete?

That show was actually the first after the band took a four month break. Following that we recorded the album just in time for it to be released before summer.

Now this is your first Coachella, how do you feel it differs from other music festivals?

It's much hotter, but the atmosphere here is such a communal one.

When you're on tour, what's a typical day for Islands?

If Islands is in Salt Lake City, Utah we'll keep to ourselves until soundcheck. Then we'll play a show and go to Denny's afterwards. SLC is a strange place to be, mormons everywhere.

Yeah, I've never been but I can definitely imagine. Islands is made up of very credentialed individuals. Since Prince is playing Coachella I was wondering if your bassist would be joining him.

Patrice hasn't played with Prince in a very long time, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them talk backstage tonight. As far as him playing with Prince, I don't see that happening but it's a great coincidence for them both to be here.

I'm a bit of a video game fanatic, so as a little fun fact, tell me about Alex and Sebastian.

They are 1993 and 1994 World Super NES Fest champions - specializing in Mario Paint, Starfox and Kirby's Dream World.

Are Islands really forever? With the new release can fans expect a new catch phrase? Would a Fall Out Boy's "this ain't a scene, it's an arm's way" be appropriate?

No, Islands are certainly forever.

And just out of curiosity, what is Islands' Coachella drug of choice?

Go to one of the oriental grills and ask for the Heu Ming*, they'll know what's up.

Islands on MySpace
*I can't promise that is the correct spelling

El Guincho Is Your Favorite

To start, I'm definitely not writing a better post on el Guincho than Hipster Runoff did, so if you're interested in reading that it is right here. I've been noticing lately that not as many people as I believed know the magic of el Guincho, which is why he is on this blog. Since SXSW, the phenomenal performances of el Guincho have been all that bloggers are talking about. "El Guincho is the next Panda Bear, a genius of contemporary music" say music critics*. If you're unfamiliar, this is enough information for you to hold a decent el Guincho conversation: he is Spanish, pretty young but not that young, makes tropical 'animal collective-like' music which you could also refer to as world music or avant-ambient if you will and the album that everyone is listening to is called Alegranza!. If you want to be an 'in-the-know' kind of el Guincho fan you can spell the alias of Pablo Diaz-Reixa as el Guinco and not El Guincho, you can refer to el Guincho as Pablo in conversation, you can drop that he uses the Roland SP-404 which you can also found being used by Panda Bear and Geologist of Animal Collective as well as MadLib, J Dilla and MF Doom. Anyways, I think that's enough pretentious info on Pablo. To end, can you tell me what el Guincho means? Seriously, I don't know.

[mediafire is actin' a fool and i've gotta jet, here's Pab's vid for Kalise and i'll post the track later]

*not an actual quote
