1-877 BE KANYE

If you've been through NY recently then you're familiar with the arrogant BE KANYE NOW ads placed in the subways systems. Well apparently there's now a commercial with the man himself, definitely worth the watch.

The Coolest Working Kids in Showbiz

It seems like every couples months we are blessed with new fat beats from the Cool Kids. The good people at Green Label Sound have took it upon themselves to bring us the next track in the already bumpin discography with the release of the single "Delivery Man" which you can listen to and download right below.

A few weeks ago while browsing through the infinite library of unheard music on the internet, I came across a band that I instantly took a liking to which is pretty rare for me. Dd/mm/yyyy is a fast paced experimental progressive new wave band who bring a certain element of pop to a genre that you would not expect. From sonic keyboard riffs to out of control noise chaos, Dd/mm/yyyy has quickly become one of my favorite bands. If you're a fan of Dan Deacon you should probably peep this.

Video for Imagine

You can download several of their songs off of their myspace.

Got a Case of the Mondays?

Yeah, Okay, Jose

Don't say you've never heard nuttin' out of Berkeley, California. Because, Okay will be the band you hear creeping out of NorCal. Not to be confused with Germany-based O.K., Okay is like indie-acoustic with choral-cuteness pop. A ghoulish voice, some electronix, and teasing melodies are Okay.

Okay is one of the side projects branched off of full-band Dilute's Marty Anderson:

OCT 3 Los Angeles @ the Avalon with DEERHOOF. A Friday night well recommended.

Natural - Okay

Saturday Night Fever

Today the wait is over! Sunset Junction is today and tomorrow and judging from that line up it'll be the best so far. So head down to Silverlake for a hot day of partying. Today Cold War Kids, Broken Social Scene, Menomena, Langhorne Slim, Entrance, Johnathan Rice, Bodies of Water, Castledoor, The Happy Hollows, and Radars to the Sky will be playing. If you've never seen Cold War Kids live you better get out there. Personally I am most excited to see Broken Social Scene.

If Sunset Junction does suit your fancy, here's what else is going on:
The Germs, The Mae Shi and Spider Problem at the Echo
Get there early. I had a chance to see Spider Problem at Little Radio's Summer Camp recently and it was definitely the craziest performance of my life. I have some live footage but I have to track it down.
Sondre Lerche and Sylvie Lewis at the Troubadour
Santa Monica Cat show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
Puppet Up! Uncensored @ Avalon

Round Robin!

I don't know if you guys are quite ready for this one yet, but allow me to introduce you to Baltimore's Dan Deacon curated Round Robin. In the spirit of this year's Fuck Yeah Fest Round Robin has become a touring performance art piece, or a music festival if that's all you wanna make out of it. While you prepare for the show of the year, here's a little FAQ:

The format of the show is as follows:
-All the bands set up at the same time along the perimeter of the room with the audience in the center
-Each band does one song per round, no breaks, back to back to back etc., until the show is completed
-There is no headliner or opener, no front row or back of the room

The 60+ people driving around by only veggie powered vehicles in a community on wheels. Curated by Dan Deacon, the tour includes bands from Floristree, Wham City, Tarantula Hill, The Bank, Comfort Dome and other Baltimore music homes

The tour is divided into two nights. The first night (Eyes Night) is a mixture of folk, noise, theatrics, improvisation, music that is spiritual, dreamy etc. The second night (Feet Night) is devoted to music that you dance, thrash or otherwise move around to and is a mixture of electronic, punk, hardcore, dance, and rock and roll musics.

Eyes Night line-up of bands:

beach house
ed schrader
jana hunter
lesser gonzalez alvarez
lexie mountain boys
nautical almanac
santa dads
teeth mountain
wzt hearts

Feet Night line-up of bands:

blood baby
dan deacon
the deathset
dj dog dick
double dagger
future islands
lizz king
nuclear power pants
video hippos

also there will be bands from this group, dubbed the "Weird Round" peppered into the line-up for both nights:

boo boos
cornelious and pitifa
funny clown
mark brown
ram ones
show beast
sports ghosts

A Vegan Treat

Vegans, get your spoons out because ice cream is back! "Cool, creamy and refreshing mint flavored, coconut milk based frozen dessert loaded with rich chocolate flakes" makes this dairy free treat the vegan dessert breakthrough of the year. Big ups to Turtle Mountain for the product.

Where's Your Sophisticated Side Ponytail?

Combine three guys, a really cute girl in a native american headdress and some pretty psychedelic colors. The result is either a wet dream for the nu-generation or Natalie Portman's Shaved Head video for "Sophisticated Side Ponytail." At under two minutes in length I would prefer for you to be the judge.

I'm On My Black Cab

I thought that the Cool Kids only rode their black mags? Well check out the video above of Mike and Chuck doin' it Chi-town style in the back of a Black Cab for BC Sessions, chapter 50. Look below to find Black Cab Sessions featuring Jeffrey Lewis and the rare Daniel Johnston.

For anyone that came to the first FMLY house show, I am sure you have been waiting for this post. At the first show Peter and the Wolf played at the FMLY house and with Red came his friend Ethan. With folksy upbeat guitar sprinkled with orgasmic hooks and melodic lyrics that are so true and honest that they might make you blush, Ethan is definitely someone to keep your eye out for.

Eight Note Run - Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele
If You're Acting Like a Baby (How Can You Expect To Be Her Man) - Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele

Somewhere between Health and Panther lies Ethan's other band Reverse X Rays. This is music that few can dream of and fewer still can pull off. RXR are one of the most creative guitar based bands I have ever come across. They are a fast paced laid back jam that sends you on a journey.

Buffalo Machine - Reverse X Rays

Does Your Kid Have Color?

Who was I kidding, I can't take a break from FMLY. Wherever there's an available internet connection, there'll be a FMLY post. Here's something that I just hand delivered on iheartcomix this very morning...

I come bearing gifts! Colorful Gifts! Kid Color gifts, that is.

Straight out of the LA/OC by way of Chicago, Kid Color has delivered one of the most impressive mixtapes I've heard all year while serving up some of the hottest dance tracks that certainly compete with the "big playahs." Whether he's remixing Interpol, mashing up Patrick Wolf or gettin' down n dirty with Bangers & Cash, this kid is adding color to it all making these hits feel so fresh and so clean all over again. Now I wouldn't typically post on anything Daft Punk related - I learned that lesson the tough way - but I am totally digging everything coming from the Color camp. Check these out, plus more available for download on the Kid Color MySpace:

Kid Color - Digital Pu$$y
Kid Color - Yo ZongaMajesty
Interpol - Obstacle 1 (Kid Color's She Can Read Mix)

Now we get to the mixtape...
Carded and Discarded came to me out of nowhere, it was through a MySpace add by a musician who had maybe around 10,000 plays at the time. I saw Franki Chan's name listed as an influence so figured why the hell not and downloaded the mixtape without peeking at the tracklist (what's wrong with a little surprise). What came to me was a surge of Animal Collective, Ghostface Killah, Black Ghosts, Avalanches and so much more that I wouldn't dare to press pause on...and yes, Animal Collective was not a typo, the tape begins with a spot-on edit of "For Reverend Green." If you're planning a party, download this and I guarantee that heads will be turned and ears will be cocked. If you're in the Chicago area don't forget to head over to Dark Wave Disco on the 23rd for Kid Color w/ Million $ Mano! More shows up on the MySpace.

Kid Color - Carded& (single audio file)
Kid Color - Carded& (individual tracks)

1. Animal Collective – For Reverend Green (Kid Color edit)
2. Ghostface Killah – Charlie Brown (Yuksek Remix)
3. The Black Ghosts – Face (Philipe De Boyar Remix)

7. Does It Offend You, Yeah? – Weird Science
8. Kid Color – Yo ZongaMajesty!
9. Kid Color – Phoenix B-O-O-T-A-Y
10. Chromeo – Fancy Footwork (Guns N Bombs Remix)
11. Junkie XL – Booming Right At You
12. Timbaland – Miscommunication (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)
13. Them Jeans – Lloyd vs. Yuksek (Them Jeans Blend)

Paris for Prez

I just caught this video of Paris Hilton talking that trash on John McCain and thought it'd be best to share. I'm crossing my fingers that Paris came up with this all on her own, it would certainly make up for answering her cell during that sex tape.

CMJ Covers Reveal Magnificence

If you're planning a trip to the big apple, do it in October. CMJ has announced their initial lineup for the balls out festival and I can hardly contain myself. It almost makes me want to go back to the nine hour days I was spending in their office last year; free all access passes are pretty bomb. Bands in bold are where you'll find FMLY.

Skipping over the larger names either because I've seen them or I don't want to be in a jam packed crowd, who do you recommend? I'm pretty pumped to see Rumspringa make it out to NY and I couldn't be more excited to hear Beach House's new summer-infused tunes.

Cory Kennedy Goes 90210

I'm sitting in a Chelsea apartment looking out at the Empire State Building and would you guess what I stumbled across on the internet? L.A.'s faux princess and prince Mark "The Cobrasnake" Hunter and Cory "IT Girl" Kennedy will be featured in the revival of what was once a television phenomenon...90210. Beginning September 2 on the CW you can see the Nylon Magazine sponsored 90210, if you dare. I'm a fan of DJ Skeet Skeet and always will be, so check out his Cory Kennedy theory, read more about CK and MH on 90210 here at Nylon or send an email to Nylon complaining about their everlasting downward spiral.

Levi Pop's!

Ex-Ladytron bassist Pop Levi has come back for the second summer in the row with "Never Never Love". It's been out for a couple weeks but I just got my hands on a copy. This fun funky poppy album is just in time for the tail end of summer. With fat synth sounds backing up funky guitar lines and a rock solid bass it's a sound to get down to. You can catch Pop Levi tomorrow night at the Echo.

Dita Dimon - Pop Levi

Summer is Almost Over

Tonight experimental pop band The Octopus Project will be playing the Knitting Factory with FMLY favorites The Histories who will be playing their last LA show of the summer. I had a chance to see The Octopus Project last time they were in town when they played with Meals for Children and let me tell you, you don't want to miss this show.

Other shows worth your time:

Nico Vega with Black Gold, Dikta, DJ MiChael and more at Three Clubs

A New President

So what do you want from Electric President? A new CD? You got it. If you're asking for a great first track, you got that as well. In fact, as soon as you pop in the album, you know exactly how it's going to turn out, which could be a good or bad thing.

Ben Cooper and Alex Kane (Electric President) have dug out of the Jacksonville music scene in Florida and into the hearts of country men and urbanity combined. It's as if you took my acoustic guitar, and turned it into a jet plane meshed together into an intricate, confusing, yet perfect bond.

Their latest album, Sleep Well produced by Morr Music, has really stirred up the cream in my morning coffees. I wanted more hard rock, and damn straight, I got it. Expect less acoustic-electric, and Morr electric-electric; less melodic humming, and a Morr eerie-factor. It's a mood shift from their past Self-Titled album, but a shift you should tune in to yourself.

Hasta Luego!

[fmlyfest via]

Hey everyone, I will be taking a break from FMLY for the next month while I travel and move out to the east coast. I would just like to once again thank everyone who came to our extravaganza on Saturday, it meant the world to Cameron, myself and all others who made the day possible. Don't forget to post any pictures on the FMLY Extravaganza event via Facebook. Until I return, Cameron will manage the blog so make sure to keep updated each day. Expect coast to coast coverage beginning in September. Until then, I'll leave you with my favorite song of the summer, and an inspirational live video of Andrew Jackson Jihad that I can not recommend enough.

These are two amazing bands that you can't miss! Megapuss is a band that you will want to see in a small venue while you still can.

William "Burial" Bevan

Both an upset to fans and a day for rejoice in the dubstep community, Burial's identity has been officially revealed. Although Hot Chip's Joe Goddard "outed" Burial as William Bevan two years ago in the UK's Independent, there was never a face to match the music until the prince of dub fully outed himself via MySpace.

for a while theres been some talk about who i am , but its not a big deal
i wanted to be unknown because i just want it to be all about the tunes.
over the last year the unknown thing become an issue so im not into it any more.
im a lowkey person and i just want to make some tunes, nothing else. my names will bevan, im from south london, im keeping my head down and just going to finish my next album, theres going to be a 12" maybe in the next few weeks too with 4 tunes. hope u like it, i'll try put a tune up later

sorry for any rubbish tunes i made in the past, ill make up for it

a big big thank you to anyone who ever supported me, liked my tunes or sent me messages, it means the world to me

big up everyone, take care, will ( burial )

I couldn't be more excited for this 12" and the idea that Burial may tour. Head on over to SMOKE/LESS/FUELS and download a dubstep history mix by DJ Vibezin.

Totally Trashed Thursdays!

[wolverine and spiderdog - via]

In case Encino is too far for you to attend the first day of Zachella, here's a list of other events tonight. There has been a lineup change for tonight's Zachella: First, Bit Shifter missed his flight (huge bummer) but to make up for it Sweet America will get the party started. Tonight the 8bit princes will cover new material from their forthcoming Dawn Metropolis while tomorrow night it'll be all about Power Supply. DJ Douggpound from Tim and Eric's Awesome Show will also be lending a helping hand tonight. See ya there! Doors open at 7.

DJDT This Saturday

If I had to choose a favorite local musician, Robert Cepeda would make my top three without a second thought. I have to say that it is not only outstanding but also an honor for FMLY to host this renaissance musician in his very first DJDT (Dream Team) performance. Most of you know the Robster from his guitar and lyrical work in Yes Means No, some of you have seen him play with The Histories, and a fewer amount of you have probably collected and obsessed over the I Just Shot My Sister And I'm Still Stabbing Her tracks as if they were rare Arcade Fire recordings (pre-bloghaus). I'm glad to say that there is a new dawn for Robert, and that is DJDT. Please stick around Saturday night for his performance after Koalacaust, it's not one to miss.

FMLY Presents...

So if you're a regular here on FMLY then you may have wondered why there was no post today on events in LA. Well I've got your answer... it's because there's nothing else that you should do tonight besides going to the Silverlake Lounge and seeing video? with Faunts and Stop Revolt. Don't forget! Plus it's being presented by us and I think that's pretty damn special. video? - the day i exploded

Local Music Week In A Nutshell

To all who attended Beatjams yesterday I hope that you had a great time. Unfortunately I missed The Histories, which I'm still incredibly bummed about, but I came just at the end of Pilgrim's set and got to hear the song I had been waiting all my life for, "Penis Up." If you were at Djavan's palace a few nights ago when Hank May serenaded a small group then you know what I'm talking about. After Pilgrim, Anamanaguchi showed off their sweet new visuals and played a fun-filled set as always - my only complaint was that the NES was almost inaudible. Then Nephews played an unforgettable set of crowd favorites that definitely got me sweatin' followed by the perfect way to end a party, Rock Dove. The success of Beatjams could not have been more welcomed for now the floodgates of the week have been opened.

Don't forget...

THE FMLY EXTRAVAGANZA! Don't worry, we have a flyer, except it's blown up to the size of a door and we can't exactly scan that kinda thing.

Hamlet 2 Screening

Hey, I hope you've all seen the trailer for Hamlet 2 - it looks fantastic! Here's your chance to score some free tickets to a screening next Tuesday featuring a Q&A sesh with star Steve Coogan. Check out the flyer below for info and the trailer above.

Bill Shatner

William Shatner "changed" my life. It's a rare occurrence that I listen to the radio other than Power 106, even rarer to do so in my car. Around 1:40am I flipped on Indie 103.1 to see what was on air and boy was I in for a treat. A familiar tune turned out to be a William Shatner cover of Pulp and I think I've found my song of the week. An unofficial video is above, I enjoy the Star Trek synching.

Alright, I'm just going to come out and say thank you to Chris from Gorilla vs Bear for hooking it up this week. I've just gotta spread the word.

I still haven't seen The Wackness, but here's the official movie soundtrack mixtape arranged by the very talented D-Nice. For everyone who grew up on east coast 90's hip-hop like Nas, Tribe, KRS-One - which I know many of you have, myself included - download this immediately.

D-Nice - The Wackness Official Movie Soundtrack Mixtape

After the major let down of El Guincho's tour cancellation, I didn't think that I could ever find a way to forgive him. Fortunately, the time came quickly as Barcelona-based label Discos Compulsivos/LUV LUV has decided on releasing El Guincho's very rare and completely sold out Folias. The best news is, IT'S FREE.

El Guincho - Folias

To top off this post, Animal Collective fans (and Pitchfork) unleashed a barrage of Youtube videos following the groups performance Saturday night at the P4k Music Festival in Chicago. A new song, "Lion In A Coma," was performed, but it's still no "Brother Sport." What I have for you is the audio from their entire set, download if you wish.

Listing Ship joins the party!

Listing Ship will be joining us at the FMLY Extravaganza next week. If you haven't heard them yet, you can check out their brand new music video right here!

The Divine Tellier

Seriously, Sebastian Tellier is a weird guy, but that's how we love him. Enjoy this lovely take away / sail away version of "Divine."

J. Tillman Is A Fox!

It's official, J. Tillman is a full-time member of Fleet Foxes. Although FMLY along with many other blogs will forever see him as a solo artist, I couldn't be more happy that he'll finally achieve the recognition that he deserves. Big ups to Aquarium Drunkard for making Tillman's entire discography available via his Los Angeles based Autumn Tone label.
