Microcastle Out Today
I'll admit that I was one of those guys who downloaded Deerhunter's Microcastle illegally when it first leaked and although I haven't yet heard the official and fully mastered version I can say confidently that Deerhunter has released one of the best albums of the year...and that's not even counting the bonus Weird Era Cont.
Today saw the release of this gem and I insist that Deerhunter friends and foes give it a chance and show some love. Microcastle is broken in four parts, you'll notice that every four songs the aesthetic changes and a new theme is developed which unifies the album at the end. The most beautiful thing about this record is not only frontman Bradford Cox's sacrifice of his craft to Deerhunter but the duality that this album plays as either ambient or focused and provoking. Like Tobacco's Fucked Up Friends I find this to be a perfectly crafted album; listen for a surprise visit from Cole Alexander of the Black Lips on "Saved By Old Times." Enjoy and come to your own opinions, lets have a conversation about the progress of the band from last year's Cryptograms.
Purchase Microcastle here.
note: my review of Merriweather Post Pavilion will be posted tomorrow.
