Weekend Update

Seriously, a big congrats to Heath Ledger for winning an award tonight.
Ledger was up against veteran actors like Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Ralph Fiennes and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Accepting the award for Ledger — who died last January of an accidental overdose of prescription medication in his home in New York City — was the film's director, Christopher Nolan, who said that Ledger "will never be forgotten."

"After Heath passed on, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema — but with the extraordinary response to his work that we've seen all over the world, I, for one, start to be able to look a bit less at that gap in the future and a little bit more at the incredible place in the history of cinema that he built for himself with his talent and with his dedication to his artistry," the director told the crowd.

"For any of us lucky enough to work with him, I think for any of us lucky enough to have enjoyed his performances, he will be eternally missed. But he will never be forgotten." [via]

Whether he would have won either way, we'll never know. But Heath, you fuckin' deserved it.

Cokemachineglow has thrown up a magnificent post of covers. Highlights include a Pale Young Gentleman cover of "Paper Planes", Noah23 doing "A Milli", and Stars Like Fleas shining their light on The Pussycat Dolls.

MTV thinks that Merriweather may make history. I think that it already has, and that MTV isn't cool just because they can drop Stereogum into a blog post.
The album the Chicago Tribune and Stereogum.com have already dubbed one of the best of the week-old year, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, could make some serious news next week when the Nielsen SoundScan numbers come out.
Why? The album, which won't get released on CD until January 20, dropped on January 6 in a deluxe double-LP 180-gram gatefold vinyl format accompanied by a full album download. And thanks to a series of listening parties across the country, it just might break into the albums chart next week, thanks to vinyl sales only.

Great, now Animal Collective is this much closer to becoming a Kanye beat. Also, if you pre-ordered Merriweather via Rough Trade, you should have received an exclusive bonus mixtape put together by Animal Collective. The quick mix covers influences such as dubstep powerhouse Kode 9, Erykah Badu and other greats and unfamiliars. Download it here.

It's finally time for Conan to leave NY and head to the beautiful coast of Los Angeles to take over Jay Leno's spot in Late Night. Think you've got luck on your side? Well find out how to win tickets to his final NY shows here.

You really can't blink when it comes to Rob Crow. One second he's on tour with Pinback, a minute later comes Thingy and then BAM you've got Goblin Cock right in the face.
Goblin Cock is a band from beyond time, beyond space, beyond your naive concept of dimension in METAL. Since before your pathetic "god" had supposedly "created" you and your kind, Lord Phallus was hunkered in a cybertimeship/fun dungeon skating the layers of what was considered "true metal"in all societies and in all generations. Eventually His Majesty realized that he really didnt care and launched a full-scale war against bland metal with and emphasis on ACTUALLY HAVING A GOOD TIME! "Bagged and Boarded" is the first assualt on your laughable 5 senses (Lord Phallus and his kind have 32). Expect a future double whammy in the form of "Come With Me if You Want to Live" - a collection of new supercharged action-metal wonderhits, and "Dragonfucker" - the 20+ minute uberpiece with a bside of numerous BRUTAL cover songs (the roaches, the osmonds, and the monkees have been rumored). arrrgghh! -"Total" Dick McThinkseeknowseverything

If you're in NY you can check out GC (uh, not Good Charlotte) on February 11 at the Highline Ballroom. LA, you've gotta wait until February 27 at the Knitting Factory.

Mad Decent just posted an exclusive Santogold remix featuring 3-6 Mafia and Project Pat. Bump it in your ride before the radio or Toyota gets their hands on this...vultures. It's right here.
